I represented New Zealand on the world stage throughout my sporting career, with my proudest achievement being gold at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. It was a defining moment. By the final round, I knew I had done enough to become world champion, securing New Zealand’s first world title in the discus. Standing on the podium and hearing the national anthem was an unforgettable experience.

What made that moment even more special was sharing it with my mother Roini, who travelled to Athens at the last minute. My achievements were never mine alone, but a reflection of the people around me, and I remain deeply grateful for that. I went on to represent New Zealand at four Olympic Games, from Atlanta in 1996 through to Beijing in 2008, before retiring from athletics in 2010.
